During her latter teen years the artist’s family gave up the rural, alternative life style, and moved to Vancouver BC where the artist pursued a career in graphic design. In 1996 she was working as a graphic designer for Western Canoeing and Kayaking when she fell in love with the ocean and traveling by sea kayaking. She quickly found that with kayaking she could slip quietly along the coastline in a non disruptive manner and be a silent witness to the profound beauty, power, and energy of the West Coast. Every summer since 1996, Shylo has spent her time living, traveling, and photographing the Canadian West Coast by kayak.

"Inspired by the natural beauty I see around me, I paint the darker, misty, and often-misunderstood places along the Canadian West Coast. My desire is to expose the spirit of the darker places by exaggerations of colour and light. Through my paintings I want the world to see more than just the wet, rainy, damp, coastal environment, but want to expose the darker beauty of what exists there. Water, in all its forms, is the driving force behind life and I'm constantly amazed by it’s power, energy, and influence on the land around it."

Shylo has exhibited both in group and solo shows throughout British Columbia, and has won numerous awards for her work as a designer and painter. Her captivating style of combining realism with a twist of exaggeration in magnificent West Coast landscapes has continued to make her a popular local artist.

Shylo is currently living and painting full time in the Salmon Arm area.
